Jeremiah 2:11. Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. NIV
Last year I bought my wife a bottle of perfume for her birthday. What she didn’t know was I was given a beautiful free red rose wrapped in tissue paper with it. It was a windy and wet June day, so I carefully tucked the rose under my coat to protect it from the wind as I walked to my car. It was not until I got home that I realised the rose was not real. However it was a really good imitation but I had broken it under my coat.
We have become skilled at making artificial flowers that look like the real thing. We have artificial this and imitation that. But this ability to make counterfeits is not a new phenomenon. As Jeremiah tells us, the people of old worshiped gods made with their own hands.
Some people have made gods of money, career, and even fame. Some, like me, are tempted to make a God of others opinions. All my life I have struggled against being too concerned about what people think of me, even to the point of hesitating to talk about my Christian faith.
I am grateful that the living God understands and forgives, and that, with God's help, I can get rid of the imitation gods that hold me back in putting the Lord first.
Prayer
Father, forgive us when we allow imitation gods to lure us away from faithfulness. Give us discerning hearts to recognise false gods and the courage to turn back to you. Amen.
Thought
What imitation gods hinder your wholehearted devotion to God?
Focus
To depose the false gods that obstruct me
