Psalm 37:4. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. (NIV)
I was running late for an early meeting on what was going to be a particularly busy day. Traffic seemed slower than usual, my car had nearly run out of petrol, and my brief case had come open in the car and papers were all over the place.
As I raced into our office building, I nearly collided with one of the tenants on the stairs. A number of inappropriate comments came to mind, but instead I thought to myself I had better pray. I asked God to use me by replacing my impatience with love. Immediately, my anger melted and I was able to respond lovingly to my fellow office worker, changing the pace of what had started out as a frustrating day. That simple prayer brought a change in me.
At home that evening I wondered, why doesn't God answer all my prayers so quickly? My early morning prayer time had been full of important requests, but my simple on-the-run prayer was answered without hesitation. Then it occurred to me that we are often quick to notice what we receive from God but not so quick to know what God requires of us.
I’ve been thinking that Psalm 37:4 above offers us a key to powerful prayer. When we completely delight ourselves in the Lord, the desires of our heart will be the desires of God's heart. Then the things we ask for will surely be given, because they will be in accordance with God's will for us.
Prayer
Loving Father, we ask for what you want for us. Draw our hearts so close to you that we never ask for anything that is not in your will. Amen.
Thought
Are my thoughts and prayers really what God wants?
