Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (NIV)
One of my colleagues came to this week quite distressed, “Our pastor of 13 years is on moving to another congregation and I along with other members of the church are very concerned.”
What they feared was losing a spiritual leader and were wondering who would be chosen to replace him. They were questioning how they would be able to carry on without him and accomplish their church goals.
Change is often hard, but it is inevitable. I thought about how we could learn from the disciples. That group went through many changes - from the lifestyle change they made when they were called to follow Christ through the distress of seeing him crucified, to the joy of his resurrection and finally to their role of reaching others.
I’ve been thinking that Jesus picked ordinary people to be his disciples, those not much different you and me. Being ordinary people, the disciples struggled with their faith, their commitment, and their pride. But by following Jesus' example of praying, being humble, and serving, the disciples accomplished great things.
Although we may be ordinary people, we as well can accomplish great things by these same gifts that Jesus gave the disciples.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for trusting us ordinary people to further your kingdom. Help us to answer when you call us to do what may seem difficult. Amen.
Thought
God accomplishes great things through ordinary people like us.
