1 Thessalonians 1:6. You welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. (NIV)
I read the following from a magazine this week:
Swinging on the end of a rope 200 feet above the seacoast was not how I planned to celebrate my birthday. It was my son's idea; he wanted me to share the pleasure of climbing and rappelling. His favourite area was the seaside where he had found "good climbs."
I did enjoy myself after I overcame my initial fear at trusting my life to three strands of twisted rope no thicker than two fingers. And I have returned many times since, enjoying the excitement of swinging down a cliff. On dull days of doing the housework or miserable days when nothing goes as planned, my attitude can be changed by thinking about the last climb or planning the next one.
I’ve been thinking that without someone to tell us about the three strands of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we might never experience the dizzy joy of trusting God as we swing out of our comfort zone. We who know the goodness of loving and living in Christ can share this good news with others. But we also must admit that life isn't always easy; some of it can be quite scary. Reminding ourselves of God's goodness can lift us over the hard places in life so we can be like a deer bounding along the pathway of life again.
Solomon, perhaps the wisest man known said, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12 NIV.
Prayer
Lord, grant us courage the trust our “three stranded rope” in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Thought
Faith can have us doing things we've never dreamed of.
Focus
To move outside my comfort zone
