Matthew 2:8 He [Herod] sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." (NIV)
When I met with Pastor Kevin this week he told me his sermon title for this week was “Through the Eyes of Herod” and the passage of Scripture for the sermon he would use was Matthew 2:1-11. When I arrived home I took time to read it and I thought about worship.
The magi carried gifts from afar and came to worship the newborn baby. King Herod said he wanted to worship the baby. Though Herod and the magi uttered the same words, “worship,” their intentions were quite different. King Herod did not plan to worship the child. He wanted to be all powerful and he only feigned interest in worshiping the Christ.
I’ve been thinking that every year we celebrate Christmas, but what do we bring to the child - Christ? Do we worship from the depths of our hearts, or do we only talk about worship? I want us to be like the kings, bringing to Christ a gift to honour him. I want us to give him our hearts, which a lot of the time strays far from him.
This Christmas, let us ask God to cleanse from us hypocrisy, selfishness, and deceit from our hearts so we may kneel before Christ to truly worship him.
Prayer
God, we thank you for coming into the world. Help us to come to you in sincere worship, offering you our hearts. Amen.
Thought
Do we only talk about worship, or do we really open our hearts to Christ?
