[God] comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

I am sure in the wake of the recent tsunami in our neighbouring countries of Samoa and Tonga; there are many people that have had a sense of relief mixed with guilt.  Relief at being spared with a few injuries and loss of homes; while many others are looking are looking for pieces of their lives in the wreckage of their homes and the loss of loved ones.

Like so many I have struggled to understand why so many have to suffer so much pain.  I think in the last chapter of Luke I perhaps have found an answer that helps.  Jesus' disciples must have felt a mixture of emotions after the crucifixion - relief that their belief had not cost them their lives and guilt that they had run for their lives in fear while their Lord was dying the death of all deaths.

Jesus knew the about the pain of death on the cross, but He did not expect his disciples to understand its significance immediately. He understood their guilt and confusion and that they would soon see his purpose more clearly.

Christ understands the pain and suffering of those whose lives are devastated by disasters, but he also understands the guilt, depression, and helpless feelings of those who escape the same events essentially unscathed. Christ is willing and able to give each of us peace and purpose, even in the midst of tragedy.

Prayer

Lord, when tragedy strikes, help those who suffer and those who are spared, that all may know You care. Amen.

Thought

If we knew all the answers to those things we don’t understand, we would be God?
