Psalm 139: 3-4. 3. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. [370]
Could we just stop for a moment – and ask our- selves, “Where is God right now—Is He here with us?”
What I find challenging – is that we must remember when we discuss God – that we can’t talk about Him – without Him hearing every word we say – Sobering thought huh?
We may be able to talk about others – Rod, Paul Roland etc – behind their backs – but no -- not with God -- He is everywhere.
And Yes! -- the scary thing is that He is right here in this room also.
So – whatever I say to you guys right now – whatever you or I might be thinking right now –
be very aware of His absolute presence among us.
I can only think that we must talk about Him always – as if we were actually looking at Him straight in the face.
The reality is that the Lord – as I am sure you are all well aware – is everywhere.
This is actually so impacting to me – and should be to all of us – because what we say cannot be hidden from Him
This also includes our unspoken thoughts – again quite sobering huh?
David told us in Psalm 139:4. TNIV. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.
Those untrue words – our loose talk –
our unkind thoughts – angry words – should never ever be spoken or thought.
God is [om nip otent] – He is everywhere.
We should only say things that would please our Lord – again we are taught by David in
Psalm 19:14. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Actually “God with us” – means actually that we don’t have to try very hard for God to hear us.
I personally am partially deaf with tinnitus – a loud buzzing in my ears – which creates a quite different scenario.
I don’t always hear as clearly as I would like
So – the conclusion is that we should listen very carefully to each other at all times – observing as well as listening.
Harold Sala in his devotional book – “Today Can Be the Best Day” – tells of a woman who bitterly complains because no one listens to her.
Not her own family – her doctors -- her lawyers – so according to her close friend -- she decided to capture the world’s attention.
She charged into a school – chose a room at random -- took out a gun and held the room full captive.
When she had everyone scared out of their wits -- and had their complete attention – she put the gun to her own head and pulled the trigger – she died instantly.
Well -- let’s agree that it was “sick” thing to do -- however when people are unheard and lonely -- sanity goes out the door – right?
That is precisely why listening is so important – if God can take time to listen -- then so should we.
Psalm 64:1. Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy.
We may believe that God only wants to hear certain requests from us.
Yes -- it is true that we should offer praise – confession -- and respectful requests -- but it is also true that God is willing to listen to anything we want to tell Him.
I’ve been thinking that David’s example to us was that he expressed himself honestly to God -- knowing that God would hear his voice.
Of course God will also hear our voice – He will always listen to us -- and He will always understand what we say.
Let us remember that God is listening to us right now -- be careful what we say and think and do
Remember not only does He hear what we say -- He hears also what we wished He did not hear – before we say it
However – the best thing about all of this is that God is always here – and always ready to help us.
God is good and always listening – and I thank God for that -- because it is what we should all want.
